Greg van Avermaet (BMC) is not a priority signing for Bahrain-Merida despite the rumours that link the rider to the Middle-Eastern formation for the 2019 season.

The situation for the future of the Belgian Olympic champion is uncertain due to the lack of clarity in the continuation of BMC as a team for the next season. There have been rumours of Bahrain-Merida wanting the rider, but even though it doesn't reject the option, it doesn't consider it urgent.

"We are still interested in Greg, but he is not our top priority," said Bahrain-Merida's sports director Rik Verbrugghe to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad. "Greg prefers to wait for BMC, but we can't wait.

The sports director, who also happens to be Van Avermaet's brother-in-law, said that the team currently has different needs. "We still want to strengthen our Classics team, but our core business is around (Vincenzo) Nibali," he explained. "His support and the eventual successor is a lot more important for us."
