Alexis Vuillermoz of AG2R La Mondiale was forced out of the Criterium du Dauphine following his crash near the finish of Monday's stage.
The Frenchman did not suffer any significant damage such as fractures of muscle lesions, but the pain in his right shoulder is simply too severe for him to keep going in the WorldTour race, according to the team.
"The pain is too great and does not allow him to hold the handlebars properly," said team doctor Eric Bouvat.
At this point it is unknown how long Vuillermoz, who will need to undergo further tests, will be sidelined.
"It's a huge disappointment because you never leave your friends and teammates without a heartfelt sadness," the rider said. "But I have a lot of difficulty moving my right arm so it would be useless to push it. The important thing now is to recover and get myself ready for the Tour de France."
