Sunweb's Soren Kragh Andersen has taken the victory after a strong performance in the Tour de Suisse. The Dane survived from the breakaway and crossed solo the finish line.

The Swiss race continued on the mountains in the fifth day of racing. The 186-kilometre route included two hors category climbs and a finish on a third category ascent.

The escape of the day was formed by 17 riders of 15 teams and included Nathan Haas (Katusha-Alpecin), Soren Kragh Andersen (Sunweb), Magnus Cort Nielsen (Astana), Gorka Izagirre (Bahrain-Merida) and Patrick Konrad (Bora-hansgrohe), among others. Some riders of the front group were dropped by the first climb but made contact again in the descent.

The second climb was too hard for some of the riders of the head of the race and only 12 remained at the end of it. Behind them, a pack pulled by BMC controlled the pace of the peloton in order to protect the Yellow Jersey of Richie Porte.

By the descent of the second climb, only five riders remained in front, including Kragh Andersen and Izagirre. The pack was unable to close the gap and a late attack of Soren Kragh Andersen gave him the stage victory.

Behind, there was movement in the peloton at the last climb and the successful attack came from race leader Richie Porte. Riders like Nairo Quintana (Movistar) stayed at his wheel but another change of pace left everyone else struggling behind.

The Australian rider arrived in the finish line in the sixth position increasing his advantage in the General Classification.
