Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) was the fastest rider at the final sprint of the first stage at the Route d'Occitanie. The Frenchman was faster than his teammate Christophe Laporte and Bryan Coquard.

The first stage of the previously known as Route du Sud was 168 kilometres long between the Cap Decouverte and Segala Carmaux over a hilly route that was bound to finish in a sprint. The escape of the day had four riders including the Eritrean national champion Meron Abraham (Bike Aid) and Direct-Energie's Damien Gaudin.

This front group took an advantage of more than four minutes with the peloton and were reeled back in with 20 kilometres to go. With 10 kilometres remaining, a group of five riders attempted to escape and included men like Kevin Reza (Cofidis), Yoann Offredo (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and Angelo Tulik (Direct Energie).

These escapees were caught by the peloton at 1.5 kilometres from the end and then all the teams organised themselves for the final sprint. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) served as the launch man to Carlos Barbero, but he could only finish in 6th position. The final fight was between Nacer Bouhanni and Christophe Laporte and had to be decided by photo finish.

Bouhanni took this victory, while Bryan Coquard (Vital Concept), Jon Aberasturi (Euskadi-Murias) and Barbero completed the top five of the day.
