Team Sunweb's Ruth Winder has won the fifth stage of the Giro Rosa and he has also reached the top of the General Classification.

The stage was 122.6 kilometres long in Omegna and included a second category climb. The day started with an escape of more than ten riders that included Liane Lippert (Sunweb) Christine Majerus (Boels-Dolmans), Elena Cecchini (Canyon-SRAM) and Sarah Roy (Mitchelton-Scott), that got an advantage of more than one minutes over the peloton.

The pace of the pack was high and the escapees were reeled back in before the only climb of the day, in which Ruth Winder (Sunweb), Tayler Wiles (Trek-Drops) and Alice Maria Arzuffi (Bizkaia-Durango) escaped and despite the efforts behind them, were not caught.

The final sprint took place between the three riders and the American rider of Sunweb seemed to have the better legs. Wiles and Arzuffi were second and third on the stage.

"For the first 80 kilometres we stayed safe and calm together in the bunch," said Winder at the end of the racing day. "We had Liane in the early break which was great and when that came back, we focused on positioning for the climb.

"The team did a really good job setting this up. I felt good over the top so we made it really hard and I put in attack and got away with two others. Coming into the sprint I had good legs and put my all in to take the win."

Winder became the fourth rider of Sunweb to wear the Pink Jersey after Ellen van Dijk, Lucinda Brand and Leah Kirchmann.
