Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) has pulled an outstanding performance at the Individual Time Trial of the Giro Rosa, climbing to the first place of GC.

The seventh stage of the Italian race was an uphill individual time trial of 15 kilometres to Alpe Gera Di Campo Moro. The stage proved to be a difficult challenge and the first rider to be able to complete the route in less than 50 minutes was Elisa Longo-Borghi (Wiggle-High5) who did it in 49 minutes and 34 seconds.

But none of the contenders could beat the dominant time trial champion Van Vleuten, who completed the course in 46 minutes and six seconds, beating Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (Cervelo-Bigla) by two minutes and 28 seconds.

With this outstanding performance, the Dutch rider climbed to the first position of the General Classification at two minutes and 53 seconds from teammate Amanda Spratt. Moolman-Pasio is the third in the overall standing.

"It was super, super hard today, but I put a lot of effort into this time trial with my team," said van Vleuten at the end of the stage. "We did a solid recon a long time ago and decided it was a bit of an unconventional course for the TT bike, but I think no matter what bike I used I had good legs today and that’s what I needed for this course.

"After yesterday’s stage I was full of confidence today and I feel really good and it’s great all the hard work paid off. We’re focused on the task in hand and we are taking it day by day, there is the Zoncolan coming up and it’s a very hard climb, but we are riding very well and we can continue with confidence."
