Dylan Groenewegen surprised all with a powerful sprint that gave him the victory of the seventh stage of the Tour de France on Friday.

The Dutchman of LottoNL-Jumbo defeated both Fernando Gaviria and Peter Sagan with ease, as he finally showed what he is capable of in this race.

"It was very difficult," he said shortly after the finish. I didn't have good legs at the beginning of the Tour but it's going better every day. I wanted to give it some time to see if the good legs would get there. I felt good in the fourth stage but the good timing was missing. But today we did it. It's amazing, I'm really grateful for myself and for my team.

"I was behind (Alexander) Kristoff when he was going. I stayed in his wheel and I thought that was the moment, and I went with 200 meters to go. It was good enough."

With the rider's shape now seemingly in order, there will be more chances for him to add further victories.

"I hope so," he said. "The legs are good now and I am very happy with this win. So we celebrate it tonight and maybe the next day again."
