Marianne Vos (WaowDeals) has won the eighth stage of the Giro Rosa. The European champion was the fastest at the reduced final sprint.

The eighth day of competition in Italy was 121.6 kilometres long between San Giorgio di Perlena-Fara Vicentino and Breganze over a mostly flat route that featured two climbs of the third category.

The day was active and tense with several attempts of an escape that increased the speed of the peloton and caused a split in two groups. The first group had around seventy riders, who kept pulling to successfully avoid the contact of the second one.

The last ascent also managed to break the group in front until only three riders remained: Marianne Vos (WaowDeals), Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle-High5) and Lucinda Brand (Sunweb). The three riders contested the victory of the stage and the Dutch European champion proved to have the better legs to take the win.

"The team has given everything here. Marianne was nicely kept at the front in order to be able to finish it off," said WaowDeals sports director Jeroen Blijlevens. "An amazing and well-deserved success which tastes great after some adversity at the beginning of the race. This might give an extra boost for the closing weekend."

This is the first victory of the season for the Dutch rider.

Annemiek van Vleuten kept the lead of the General Classification.
