Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) has taken the victory at the Monte Zoncolan in the Giro Rosa. The rider crossed the finish line of the ninth stage on her own.

The ninth stage of the Italian race was 104.7 kilometres long between Tricesimo and the Monte Zoncolan. The day started with the news of the withdrawn of Marianne Vos (WaowDeals) due to sickness and Kirsten Wild (Wiggle-High5) because she wants to prepare for RideLondon and the European track championships.

After catching the first escapees, a compact peloton arrived at the bottom of the Zoncolan. Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) and Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (Cervelo Bigla) attacked with ten kilometres to go.

The South African couldn't hold the pace of the Dutch rider, who went on to claim a solo victory at the top of the Zoncolan. Moolman-Pasio crossed the finish line in the second position and Amanda Spratt was third.

This is the first time that women climb the Zoncolan from the Ovaro side, the same that was used earlier in the year for the Giro d'Italia. "Today was epic on the Zoncolan, but I loved it," said van Vleuten. "I was looking forward to this day and of course defending the GC and the Maglia Rosa was my primary objective, but I also wanted to win this stage really, really badly.

"It’s awesome that the Queen Stage was organised on such a famous climb like Monte Zoncolan, it’s really good for women’s cycling and makes the day unforgettable. It is such a hard climb, so steep that it was difficult to put pressure on the front wheel."

Van Vleuten keeps the GC lead with one stage to go.
