Richie Porte has abandoned the Tour de France after suffering a crash in the early parts of stage 9 to Roubaix.

A large crash took place in the peloton well before it reached the feared cobbled sections of Sunday stage. BMC Racing Team's Porte was its principal victim, with the rider holding his shoulder to reveal a potential collarbone fracture.

The Australian came to this Tour hoping to make amends for the way he left the race last year, when he suffered a horror crash along with Daniel Martin on a descent, leaving him out of competition for most of the second half of the season.

At the time of today's crash, Porte occupied tenth place in the general classification at 57 seconds from race leader Greg Van Avermaet.
