John Degenkolb of Trek-Segafredo confirmed that he is far from done with a brilliant victory at the much anticipated Tour de France stage to Roubaix.

The German attacked along with race leader Greg van Avermaet and Yves Lampaert in the final phase of the race and outsprinted the two Belgians to take the win he was longing for.

"Pure happiness," a very emotional Degenkolb said minutes after taking the win. "I was chasing this victory for so long. It's really hard to describe.

"It was a really hard fight all day. It was also a victory of the team and we really had a plan to stay out of trouble all the time. And it worked out really well. It was unbelievable. This is a very big victory after a very long time."

The German dedicated the win to someone who has meant a lot to him in his life. "I had been through a lot of things in the past and it was such a hard time. I'm so happy to dedicate this victory to one of my best friends who passed away last winter. This was really something for him.

"Everybody said that I was done, after this accident, that I would never come back. But I said I was not done. That I would need at least one really big victory for this guy. His name is Jörg and he was my second father. It was a horrible accident and a huge loss to be without him. I'm so happy to get this victory now for him."

This is the second huge moment for Degenkolb in this city, after winning Paris-Roubaix in 2015. "There is no way to make it more dramatic, nicer or more fantastic. I'm totally overwhelmed," he concluded.
