Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) has won the last stage of the Giro Rosa, taking also the overall victory of the race.

The last stage of the Italian race was 120 kilometres long from and to Cividale del Friuli, featuring a first category climb in the last kilometres of the course. The day started with the escape of 13 riders that included Elena Cecchini (Canyon-SRAM) and Chantal Blaak (Boels Dolmans), who took a lead of around three minutes with the peloton.

During the first kilometres of the climb of the day, the escape was caught and Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) attacked and remained on her own until she arrived in the finish line. Lucinda Brand (Sunweb) crossed the line in the second position and Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) was third.

"This is a dream come true, not only for me but for the whole team," said van Vleuten. "We prepared so well for this race and to win six stages, the overall and three jerseys and do it in this way racing with confidence and control it’s a super story for the team.

"Especially because before I thought that I would never win the Giro-Rosa. My first one was in 2010 and I always thought that I am not a climber, so it won’t happen, but yesterday to win on the Zoncolan and then today to win the GC, it’s very special."

Cervelo-Bigla's Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio climbed on the second step of the podium and van Vleuten's teammate Amanda Spratt was third in the overall classification.
