Tour de France - Geraint Thomas: It's unreal, I didn't expect it at all

Geraint Thomas took the stage victory and the Yellow Jersey after a powerful display by him and Team Sky in the 11th stage of the Tour de France.

The Welshman surpassed former teammate Mikel Nieve in the last meters to take the stage win. Nieve was then also overtaken by Tom Dumoulin and Thomas' teammate Chris Froome, who took third place at 19 seconds.

"It's unreal," Thomas said. "I didn't expect it at all. We were low on numbers so it was more instinct when I went. Had a little gap and Froomey could follow those guys there. I got across to Dumoulin and I was able to sit on because Froomey was coming across.

"Then I could see 'Frosty' (Nieve). He's a good mate. It's a shame but I had to go for that win."

Of the favourites to win the Tour this year, Thomas was the best placed ahead of this stage but still had to perform well in order to actually take the lead.

"I knew it was a good chance obviously, but I didn't know how everybody else was gonna ride. To wear the Yellow Jersey is always a massive honour. I managed to do it last year and to do it two years in a row is pretty nice," he said.

The stage was eventful with attacks from Alejandro Valverde and later Dumoulin, but Thomas always kept trust in a positive outcome.

"We were expecting attacks. When they go it's never nice to see them riding away but we have confidence in each other and we rode really well."
