Serge Pauwels (Dimension Data) has broken his elbow at the 15th stage of the Tour de France. The injury has left him out of the race.

Pauwels was part of the day's breakaway and he arrived at the final kilometre with the remaining of that group. The riders were heading to sprint for the ninth position of the stage and on the last curve he touched wheels with Mitchelton-Scott's Damien Howson and hit the deck.

The rider was able to finish the stage but further examinations gave him the bad news. "Unfortunately Serge had a nasty crash in the finale of today's stage," said Team Doctor Jarrad Van Zuydum. "The crash was of no fault of his own and seemed a very pointless crash as well. He has come down quite hard on his right elbow and fractured the olecranon process of the right elbow.

"It's actually an injury he has had on the left side before and it is something that requires surgery to fix. We are already making arrangements for him to have surgery in Antwerp and he will be back on the trainer pretty soon after that surgery, but obviously, we are all very disappointed about the crash."
