Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) is set to undergo surgery next week in Italy to treat the vertebral fracture he suffered at the 2018 Tour de France.

The former Tour de France champion suffered a crash at the 12th stage of the French grand tour when his bike seemingly got tangled with a camera leash of a member of the public. Nibali finished the stage, but further examinations revealed a fracture in the T10 vertebra.

"After consultations of the Team Bahrain-Merida medical staff with various specialists and after an attentive and careful examination of the athlete’s clinical condition and future perspectives, the Team and the rider agreed to the decision to have a percutaneous vertebroplasty surgery. The procedure is going to take place on next week in Italy," explained Team Doctor Emilio Magni.

Nibali's program for the rest of the season includes the Vuelta a España and the World Championships if his recovery goes according to plan.
