Michael Matthews (Sunweb) has finished the Clasica San Sebastian disappointed about his chances for the victory being finished by the big crash of the day.

With 20 kilometres to go, a big crash happened at the front of the peloton that didn't injure any of the Sunweb riders but forced them to change bikes and wheels, ending the possibilities for the Australian to get a good result.

"Today was shaping up to be a really good day for us, we had a super strong team around me the whole day and I was really impressed with all the boys today," said Matthews at the end of the race.

"We got into the final of the race with five guys ready to set up the final climb for me but with 20 kilometres to go there was a really big crash in the front of the bunch which impacted all of us. Our race was over after that, unfortunately. It’s super sad because I had really good legs today and the team were riding amazingly together."

Sunweb's coach Luke Roberts also thinks it is a shame that a day that seemed to go well for the team, finished this way. "The day went well for us and we still had 5 riders together going towards the final climb, unfortunately, a crash took down all of our guys with 20 kilometres to go, bike and wheel changes were needed and the chance for a result was gone," he commented.
