Sepp Kuss (LottoNL-Jumbo) has taken a solo victory at the Queen stage of the Tour of Utah. With this win, the American rider extended his GC lead with one stage to go.

The fifth stage of the American race was 154.8 kilometres long, featuring one climb of the fourth category, one of the first category and a climbing hors-category finish, and took the riders from Canyons Village to Snowbird Resort. The escape of the day was formed at 40 kilometres into the stage and included riders like Daniel Jaramillo, Pascal Eenkhoorn, and Joseph Rosskopf, among others.

The front group built a gap of more than four minutes with the peloton. Meanwhile, LottoNL-Jumbo took the lead of the pack and set a rhythm that left riders struggling in the back in the second climb of the day. At the last climb of the day, BMC's Kilian Frankiny attacked from the front and took a considerable gap over his fellow escapees.

EF Education First tried to set a high pace in the peloton to leave race leader Sepp Kuss (LottoNL-Jumbo) with as little help as possible but the team responded well to the attacks. With seven kilometres to go, Kuss launched an attack and overtook Frankiny, while Ben Hermans (Israel Cycling Academy) went on to chase him.

Kuss managed to keep the gap with the others until the end, taking a solo victory and increasing his advantage in the general classification. Hermans crossed the finish line 39 seconds after the stage winner and Trek-Segafredo's Peter Stetina was third, at one minute and 18 seconds from Kuss.

The American rider of LottoNL-Jumbo has now an advantage of one minute and 21 seconds over Hermans, who climbed to the second overall position, and of two minutes and five seconds over Joe Dombrowski (EF Education First).
