Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Floors) has taken the victory at the first stage of the BinckBank Tour. The Dutchman was the fastest at the final sprint and crossed the line just ahead of Marcel Kittel and Caleb Ewan.

The first stage of the race was 177.3 kilometres long between Heerenveen and Bolsward in the Netherlands. The day started with an escape of six men that included Manuele Boaro, Julius van den Berg and Elmas Reinders, which got a gap of more than three minutes with the peloton.

With 10 kilometres to go, the escape was caught and soon after Magnus Cort Nielsen (Astana) suffered a crash caused by the rain. At eight kilometres from the finish, Rompoot-Nederlandse Loterij's Jan Willem Van Schip attacked but was reeled back in three kilometres later.

Teams like Sunweb, Mitchelton-Scott and Quick-Step Floors took the lead in the peloton to position their sprinters for the finish. At two kilometres from the end, there was a crash in the bunch but the teams that could continue kept going to force a fast finish.

Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Floors) was well positioned by his teammates and he showed to be the strongest man at the final metres, taking the victory ahead of Marcel Kittel (Katusha-Alpecin) and Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton-Scott).

The Dutchman of Quick-Step Floors also took the lead in the overall classification.
