Patrick Lefevere, Quick-Step Floors' CEO, has commented that he didn't have the money to keep Niki Terpstra after the rider announced his signing with Direct Energie.

The news of Terpstra's new team came as a surprise after spending the last eight season in Quick-Step Floors, time in which he won important races like the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. Media asked Lefevere about it at the end of the stage of the BinckBank Tour.

"An arrogant bastard to some from the outside world, but in the team Niki always gave everything," he commented. "He created atmosphere, he motivated. This is a big loss."

Lefevere doesn't have bad feelings for the Dutchman. "I must say that I have a lot of respect for Niki because he waited so long for me," he explained. "But we are now at the 15th of August. If you wait too long as a rider of that calibre, you risk falling between two chairs. I don't have the money. It was not a little too little, there was nothing in the budget."

"He has a new house, two children, he is a great guy. I can't blame him. Even though it hurts a lot for me."
