Andrey Amador (Movistar) is set to participate at the World Championships of Innsbruck with the Costa Rican team but may withdraw due to the economic situation presented by the country's federation.
The rider wrote an open letter on Facebook where he explains that he and his team don't have any kind of support from the Federation of Costa Rica. "That day is the only day of the year in which the Costa Rican riders have the opportunity of carrying the colours of Costa Rica on our jersey for the world to see," he wrote. "But what should be a party is far from it because the three riders that are going to represent the country don't have any kind of support.
"Some days ago I talked to the National coach and he explained that there is no money and that the riders that are coming with me will have to pay for themselves. I honestly think that is a shame. And the saddest thing about the situation is that there are people that will be left without the opportunity of riding an event like this because of the lack of economic resources. Is this the situation that we deserve?"
Amador explained that he feels sad about the lack of action from the federation, the Costa Rican Institute of Sports and Recreation (ICODER) and the local Olympic Committee. "These are not the conditions to represent a country in the World Championships," he continued. "So, even if it hurts me for me and my fellow countrymen, if things don't change I won't start on the event. Basically, because I don't think it's ethic that we have to pay for it. This isn't the first time that we find ourselves in this situation and I think there is a limit.
"I don't do this to save money. I do it to complain about these institutions that don't give us any support. Last year I took charge of the uniforms for the selection but I can't keep doing this.
"I think we should honestly consider for which things we have money and for which we don't. Sport should be very important to our society and we are not giving any good examples in the future. What is the youth going to dream of without any support? Which is the example that we are giving?"
