Wout Poels (Team Sky) has taken the victory of the sixth stage of the Tour of Britain. The rider launched a last-metres attack and crossed the line ahead of Julian Alaphilippe and Hugh Carthy.

The riders went through a 168.3-kilometre stage that featured four climbs of the first category and one of the third category at the sixth stage of the British race. Tony Martin (Katusha Alpecin), Connor Swift (Madison Genesis) Vasil Kiryenka (Sky) and James Shaw (Lotto Soudal) formed the breakaway of the day in the first kilometres of the stage.

Not too far after the real start, race leader Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) suffered a crash but soon stood up and was taken back to the peloton by his teammates. For most of the stage, Quick-Step Floors and LottoNL-Jumbo controlled the pace of the peloton.

The escapees were caught just before the last climb of the day and right away Bob Jungels pulled his leader Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Floors) and the two of them created a small gap with the rest of the favourites. At two kilometres to go, Alaphilippe attacked with the hope of winning back those six seconds that separate him from the GC lead, but Roglic stayed at his wheel.

They were later joined by Hugh Carthy (EF Education First) and him along Alaphilippe managed to leave Roglic struggling behind, while Sky's Wout Poels joined them. Poels accelerated at the last metres and left the other two behind, taking like this the victory of the stage.

Alaphilippe climbed to the top of the General Classification.
