Team Sunweb's Michael Matthews has taken the victory at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montreal two days after he also took the win in Quebec.

The circuit of the day 195 kilometres long and was divided in 16 laps of 12.2 kilometres each. The first part of the race had several attempts of a breakaway and at the end, a group of five riders managed to break free and built a gap of around five minutes with the pack.

This group got caught with two laps to go and right away a new one was formed by Matej Mohoric, Jan Polanc and Gregor Mühlberger. They were reeled back in with 11 kilometres to go, as James Knox unsuccessfully tried his luck along with Jakob Fuglsang and Tim Wellens.

The trio was caught at six kilometres to go and two kilometres later Benoit Cosnefroy was the last rider to try to get away without any luck. The race came to a bunch sprint in which Michael Matthews showed to be the strongest sprinter by crossing the finish line ahead of Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida) and Greg Van Avermaet (BMC).

"Wow! What can I say, I really have no words," said the Australian after the finish line. "I just can't thank the team enough for believing in me throughout this really hard year, and again the boys today were amazing. It wouldn't have been possible without such a strong team around me, so I can't thank them enough."
