Michael Woods of EF Education First took a heroic win at the top of the Balcon de Bizkaia climb in the 17th stage of the Vuelta a España.
The Canadian launched a strong attack from the breakaway in the closing 300 meters and gave it his all to stay ahead of his chasers.
It's hard to describe. I won," said a very emotional Woods after the finish. "There were so many people on the sides of the road today screaming my name. My director Juanma (Garate) was on the radio and in the last 500 meters he just said 'do this for your family'.
"My wife had a stillbirth two months ago. We lost our little guy. His name was Hunter. The whole time I was just going up the climb, thinking of him. I wanted to win so bad for him. And I did. I did."
The win is Woods' first ever in a grand tour.
