Tom Dumoulin occupied the second spot of the podium of the team time trial at the World Championships with Team Sunweb. The rider doesn't like that this is the last time for this event and he is not too convinced about the potential replacements.

Sunweb was 19 seconds slower than Quick-Step Floors in Innsbruck and was second at the last edition of the event. "We couldn't go any faster and I think we didn't make any mistakes anywhere," said the rider to Dutch newspaper AD.

The Dutchman will miss the event but it's not convinced about the replacement the UCI will announce later in the week: a mixed team time trial. "If it turns out that this is an expensive event that doesn't pay back, something else has to be invented, " he explained. "I don't know if it (the mixed event) will be the solution or if people at home will find it more interesting than what we have shown today.

"I don't think so. The riders will be less enthusiastic about it. It will be strange to suddenly ride together. We, the Netherlands, are immediately a top favourite, particularly thanks to the women, of course."

But Dumoulin also understands the other side of the current event. "I think it is a shame that this was the last time this discipline gets included," the Dutchman affirmed. "We competed for the medals in the past two years and it is also a nice part for the team: a team event where you can distinguish yourself.

"But I also understand the other side: there are plenty of teams that don't have any chance, What should they participate in such an event?"
