Tom Dumoulin (The Netherlands) finished in the fourth position of the road race of the World Championships after catching the leading trio with 1.5 kilometres to go.

Dumoulin was disappointed after failing to make it to a podium position at the race in Innsbruck. "The best three riders were away at the front and I caught them too late to be able to make the difference," the rider said at the end of the race. "I tried to make a move in the final kilometre but Valverde was sharp and reacted straight away so I waited for the sprint.

"I left a bit of a gap in the sprint but I was completely empty and couldn’t do anything anymore. It’s too bad to just miss the podium but I gave it everything I had. I was 4th on the climb and 4th on the line, so the results reflect the race situation well."

The Dutchman was also frustrated after the individual time trial, in which he took the silver medal, and the result of the day adds to that feeling. "Valverde did a long sprint and I just couldn't do anything anymore, I could not stay at his wheel for so long. I'm disappointed that I didn't get to the podium," he commented.
