Spain's Alejandro Valverde has taken the victory at the World Championships road race. The rider was the fastest at the reduced final sprint.

The Spaniard had been six times on the podium of the World Championships and at 38 this is his first time at the top of it. "This is unbelievable! I still can't believe it," said the Spaniard at the end of the day.

"It has been many years fighting and at the end, I have achieved this. But this is not only mine, I also have to thank my selection, which was magnificent. They were aware of me the whole time.

Valverde arrived to the last-kilometre mark with Romain Bardet, Michael Woods and Tom Dumoulin. "I had to know how to behave in the group and find my distance," he explained. "They left me all the responsibility, so when there were 300 metres to go I started the sprint. That was my place."

The rider was in tears after his victory as this was a moment he wished would come. "This belongs to all the selection and to the people who loves and supports me," Valverde said. "I'm out of words. It was my dream to be World Champion and I was so close so many times. I had six medals but none of Gold.

"I had to be at the final sprint. I couldn't fail so many people and my selection. I am incredibly excited."
