The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has announced that the World Championships of 2022 will take place in Wollongong, Australia.

This will be the second time that the world competitions will go to the Oceanic country after the events of 2010 in Melbourne in which Thor Hushovd and Giorgia Bronzini won the road races of men and women, Fabian Cancellara and Emma Pooley won the Individual Time Trials and Michael Matthews and Taylor Phinney won the U23 road race and time trial, respectively.

The city of Wollongong is in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, at around 70 kilometres from Sydney. Its surroundings have roads that can be suitable both for a course for sprinters as well as for Classic riders, but the route will be announced later.

This World Championships will follow the competitions in Yorkshire in 2019, in the Swiss Cantons of Vaud and Valais in 2020 and the Flanders region of Belgium in 2021.
