The Union Cycliste Internationale has given a green light to Wout Van Aert to start negotiations with a new team for 2019. The Belgian rider broke unilaterally his contract with Veranda's Willems-Crelan last September.

Van Aert is free to negotiate with other teams to find a new squad for 2019, the only condition is that the transfer has to be complete before the end of the year.

"Today we received the official message from the UCI legal unit that explained that Wout Van Aert can negotiate freely with a new employer, provided that the transfer is completed before the 31st of December of 2018," explained the rider's lawyer Walter Van Steenbrugge to Belgian broadcaster Sporza.
"That means that from now on Wout can start the negotiations with a new team so he can get to start the upcoming cycling season on the road."

It is rumoured that the cyclocross World Champion, who also was third at the 2018 Strade Bianche, will join LottoNL-Jumbo one year earlier than expected. The Belgian had already agreed to sign with the Dutch team from the 2020 season.

Van Aert decided to break his relationship with Veranda's Willems-Crelan after it was announced its merger with Roompot.
