Dutchman Stef Clement has announced his retirement from professional cycling. The rider suffered physical problems in the preparation for the Tour de France and hasn't competed ever since.

The rider of the team currently known as LottoNL-Jumbo had to interrupt his preparation for the Tour de France in May due to physical problems and didn't start in any races since. After medical research and consultation between the Dutchman at the team, it was decided that he will continue working in the team but in a different position, particularly focusing on nutrition and promotion.

"It's not the way I wanted to finish my career," Clement commented. "For fifteen years it has been my passion, hobby and work. I look back with pride and I achieved more than I ever thought possible.

"If you are not sure whether a comeback is a sensible option, you start looking at alternatives. After the team offered me this position, this seemed the sensible thing to do. I am grateful to the team for this opportunity and I look forward to taking a new direction."

The rider was part of teams like Rabobank Continental, Bouygues Telecom, Rabobank, Belkin, IAM Cycling and Team LottoNL-Jumbo. The 2018 Tour de Romandie, which was won by Primoz Roglic, was the last race of Clement as a professional rider.
