Telefonica has announced the extension of its sponsorship agreement with Movistar Team. The Spanish company has prolonged its commitment with the team until the end of 2021.

Telefonica will continue sponsoring the men's and women's team for three more seasons as it has done for the last eight seasons. During those eight years, the team has topped the UCI WorldTour raking four times, has won two grand tours (the 2014 Giro d'Italia and the 2016 Vuelta a España) and claimed eleven podium spots, has taken two World Championships victories (2013 with Rui Costa and 2018 with Alejandro Valverde), has taken the UCI Hour Record in 2015 and 27 National Titles.

Movistar has taken a total of 257 individual victories in five continents, including one-day classics and almost all main WorldTour stage races.

"Telefónica’s support was key to obtaining those results, especially considering that their backing started in a particularly difficult moment for our sport," said Eusebio Unzue, general manager of Movistar Team.

"Our commitment is to continue to live up to the values of these big brands, and represent their employees and clients across the world."

Valverde and Nairo Quintana are the riders that have obtained the most success for the team. "Their individual triumphs are a consequence of their ambition and the whole team’s great work, a value which Telefónica identifies itself profoundly with," commented Telefonica's global partnership manager Rafael Hernandez de Alarcon.

"We also want to thank the team’s closure with their audience, the millions of fans who get to the roads around the world to cheer them on, or follow them through television and social media."
