The route of the 2019 edition of the Vuelta a España was announced in Alicante, a city close to where the start of the race will be.

The 74th edition of the Spanish race will take place between the 24th of August and the 15th of September of 2019, and will start at the Salinas de Torrevieja and Madrid. The presentation of the route of the race was done at the ADDA of Alicante.

The Vuelta a España will start on the 24th of August in the Salinas de Torrevieja with a team time trial and the next three stages will take place on the Costa Blanca. Then, the peloton will head to Valencia, Teruel, Castellon, Tarragona and Barcelona with stages that will include sprints and new uphill finishes.

A day before the first rest day, there will be a spectacular mountain stage in the Principality of Andorra. Then the race crosses the border to France and after it will return to the Peninsula to Navarra, the Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias, to face stages that will visit familiar peaks that will favour the climbers.

The final week, the race moves to Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y Leon and the Community of Madrid. "It’s going to be a hard but very interesting Vuelta, with surprises, intrigue and emotion guaranteed," said Javier Guillen, General Manager of La Vuelta.

"Short but intense stages, including innovation and new and unprecedented ascents. The Vuelta brand is what it is, and we will never give it up, to the contrary, we seek to strengthen it."

The 2019 edition of the Spanish grand tour will also be the tenth anniversary of the Red Jersey. It was worn in 2010 for the first time by Vincenzo Nibali. "Red is associated with success, passion, and Spain and is now firmly associated with the unparalleled spectacle that is our race," explained Guillen.
