Tosh Van der Sande has reacted to the positive doping test result he was recently notified of. The rider explained that the wrong nasal spray was mentioned in the doping control form.

Lotto Soudal announced the suspension of the rider due to positive test result on a sample that was taken last November during the Six Days of Ghent. The rider mentions in a press release that everything was "just a mistake".

"During the Six Days of Ghent I was checked for doping," Van der Sande explained. "The last day it is customary that all the riders that are on the podium are checked. Then, it was a big surprise for me to receive a letter with the result of an adverse analytical finding.

"My sample contained prednisolone from the nasal spray Sofrasolone. This nasal spray is freely available, was delivered to me via the team doctor and it is permitted in competition if it's stated on the doping control form."

Van der Sande claims the mistake was done in the form at the doping control. "I took this intranasally. In the hustle and bustle, the form mentioned 'Mometasone spray' instead of 'Sofrasolone', which is used for the same medical issues," he commented. "It is therefore only a material error. In the past, I used the two nasal sprays alternately, always delivered via a team doctor.

"I will now work with my advisers Mr Johnny Maeschalck and Mr Kristof De Saedeleer and my manager Jef Van den Bosch to do what is necessary to explain this to the UCI and to clear my name."
