Mitchelton-Scott's Amanda Spratt has taken the victory of the second stage of the Santos Women's Tour Down Under. With this win, the rider climbed to the top of the General Classification.

The reigning champion of the Australian race showed a superb performance on Mengler Hill and crossed the finish line 39 seconds ahead of teammate Lucy Kennedy and at 45 seconds from Rally UHC's Krista Doebel-Hickoc.

The stage started with the escape of Rebecca Wiasak (UniSA Australia) and Deborah Paine (New Zealand), who were also the first escapees of the current edition of the race. They took an advantage of more than two minutes over the peloton, which was pulled by a Mitchelton-Scott that didn't want to waste any chances.

The two frontwomen were caught with seven kilometres to go, as the peloton got ready for the last climb. Kennedy was the first to attack, forcing the rest to increase the pace and thinning the group.

Spratt bridged to her teammate some kilometres later and very soon also overtook her, heading like this to a strong victory. "What can I say, my teammates were so so amazing and whenever they ride so hard for you like that, you want to finish it off," she commented. "We had a plan and when you can ride it to perfection as a team, it just feels amazing.

"We had Grace (Brown) do a fantastic job in the three or four kilometres before the climb and then Lucy hit it. I had instructions to attack and bring no one with me so that's what I did. Obviously, today was a great day for us and puts us in the good position but we know tomorrow is still a tough day so we have to rest a little bit, celebrate a tiny bit and get ready for tomorrow."

The top three of the day became also the top three of the General Classification of the race after the second stage.
