Deceuninck-Quick-Step and Trek-Segafredo have taken the victories at the Towards Zero Race Melbourne, a criterium that serves as the prelude for the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Race.

The event had a new format in which the team gets crowned as victorious through a series of sprints in which they could take points. Deceuninck-Quick-Step took 95 points and Elia Viviani won the Individual Sprint Classification, while Trek-Segafredo tool 90 points and Lotta Lepistö also won the Individual Sprint Classification.

"I think everyone was worried this morning when they saw the new format because it's not an easy criterium," said Viviani at the end of the race. "Normal race then a final sprint where you can try the lead out and everything. You probably need to do 70km full gas and try to manage.

"Some people try to go full gas at the start and they die in the last part. It was not easy to manage but the first goal was to win with the team. You see us, in every sprint, me and Michael (Morkov) sprinting – we want to take more points, not just one. Cavagna and Devenyns did an amazing job to follow the move. They go with us and they take first and third, and then we sprint on the back."

Lepistö was glad to recover on time from the sickness that left her out of the Tour Down Under. "I had a big stomach virus and then a cold – so everything at the same time," she commented. "Not a great start for the year but I think it was nice to start today.

"It was a little hectic with the new formula, but of course for the spectators, it is more interesting. It was nice to try something different – it was harder definitely."
