Alexander Kristoff of UAE Team Emirates has won the opening stage of the Tour of Oman 2019. The Norwegian was the fastest sprinter in the streets of Suhar Corniche.

The opening stage of this year's edition began at Al Sawadi Beach, finishing in Suhar Corniche 138.5 kilometers later. The profile was flat, with just two intermediate sprints set to cause some excitement on the way.

Michael Schär (Team CCC), Alexis Guerin (Delko Marseille Provence), Emiel Planckaert (Lotto Soudal) and Sergio Rodríguez (Euskadi Basque Country - Murias) attacked in the opening phase of the stage, quickly building an advantage of more than ten minutes.

UAE Team Emirates, Vital Concept - B&B Hotels and Team Arkea Samsic took charge in the peloton meanwhile, causing the gap to decrease to just over a minute.

The escapees then recovered some of their lead but lost valuable input with the dropping of Planckaert as they approached the final phase of the stage.

The trio was eventually caused at six kilometers from the finish line, after which Team UAE Emirates and Kristoff did enough to secure the victory. Second place went to Bryan Coquard of Vital Concept - B&B Hotels and Cofidis sprinter Nacer Bouhanni took third place.

As such, Kristoff also takes the overall lead ahead of Sunday's Stage 2.
