Trek-Segafredo's Markel Irizar has announced that the Clasica San Sebastian will be the last race of his career. The Spaniard will retire from professional cycling after 16 years in the peloton.

The 39-year-old is one of the most experienced riders in the peloton and since his arrival to Trek-Segafredo in 2012, he has been part of iconic moments like the double Paris-Roubaix/Tour of Flanders of Fabian Cancellara in 2013 or Chris Horner's victory in the 2013 Vuelta a España.

Irizar has worked hard for the team and has established himself as one of the most reliable domestiques and one of the most likeable riders in the peloton. Despite having a supporting role in the team, his palmares includes the victories at the 2011 Vuelta a Andalucia and the 2010 Tour de Poitou Charentes.

After 16 years in the professional peloton, the rider will retire at his home race, the Clasica San Sebastian in August. Until then, Irizar will continue riding his normal calendar, that will have the UAE Tour as its next challenge.
