Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Fabio Jakobsen has been the fastest man at the first stage's reduced final sprint of the Volta ao Algarve.

The first stage of the Portuguese race was also the longest of the 2019 edition with a route of 199.1 kilometres. The escape of the day was formed by teammates Antonio Angulo and Sergio Paulinho of local team Efapel, and they were reeled back in by the pack with 23 kilometres to go.

Everything was set up for a final sprint but there was a mass crash with seven kilometres to go that left only around 50 men in front to fight for the stage victory. Among the affected riders were Trek-Segafredo's Jasper Stuyven and John Degenkolb, Jumbo-Visma's Dylan Groenewegen and Amund Groendahl Jansen and Dimension Data's Edvald Boasson Hagen.

Jakobsen still had with him teammates like Enric Mas, Zdenek Stybar and Florian Senechal, who helped him to take the victory of the stage in his first race of the season. Groupama-FDJ's Arnaud Demare, Bora-hansgrohe's Pascal Ackermann, UAE Team Emirates' Simone Consonni and Lotto Soudal's Jasper De Buyst completed the top five of the day.

The Dutch rider of Deceuninck-Quick-Step is also the first leader of the 2019 edition of the Portuguese race.

The second stage of the Volta ao Algarve will feature a mountainous route with one climb of the third category, another of the second and a finish on the first category climb in Foia.
