The organisation of the Tour de France has confirmed that the 2021 edition of the grand tour will start in Copenhagen. Denmark will become the tenth country to host the grand depart of the race.

Which was an open secret has been confirmed by the Tour de France: the 2021 Grand Depart of the 108th edition of the race will be in Copenhagen. The first three stages of the race will take place in the Scandinavian country.

The capital of Denmark is known for having more bicycles than people and has been able to integrate cycling into its daily life better than other places in the world. This is why the organisation of the French grand tour has decided to start its 2019 edition there with an individual time trial through its historic centre.

The second stage will take the peloton to the island of Zealand and take the 18-kilometre Great Belt Bridge that will take it to Nyborg and the island of Funen. The Danish adventure will finish on the Jutland peninsula with a stage suited for the sprinters between Vejle and Sonderborg.

"The Tour de France is the biggest cycling race on Earth, but we still have much to learn!" said race director Christian Prudhomme. "The Danes set an outstanding example by making bicycles their leading means of transport in urban areas.

"In Copenhagen, we will meet fans who acclaim the champions of world cycling. The energy that supporters and curious locals will channel to riders, followers and viewers of the Tour will most assuredly be a great source of inspiration to succeed in our greatest challenge: seeing the future on a bike."
