Trek-Segafredo's Ruth Winder has taken the victory at the first stage of the Setmana Ciclista Valenciana. The rider crossed the finish line ahead of Soraya Paladin and Karol-Ann Canuel.

The first stage of the Spanish race was 126 kilometres long and took the riders between Cullera and Gandia. At the first kilometres of the day, Ale Cipollini's Diana Peñuela escaped and managed to create a gap of around two minutes with the peloton, which made believe that she could hold it until the end.

With 50 kilometres to go, the Colombian rider was neutralised. At the descent of the second climb of the day of the Barxeta, a group of seven riders attacked and included Soraya Paladin (Ale Cipollini), Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, Leah Thomas (Bigla), Margarita Victoria Garcia (Movistar), Karol-Ann Canuel (Boels Dolmans) and Ruth Winder (Trek-Segafredo).

The speed of the front women slimmed the group until only Winder, Garcia, Paladin and Canel remained. In the last kilometre, Winder attacked and crossed the finish line on her own ahead of Paladin and Canuel, who were in the second and third position, respectively.

The American rider of Trek-Segafredo is the first leader of the 2019 Setmana Ciclista Valenciana.
