UAE Team Emirates' Tadej Pogacar has won the second stage of the Volta ao Algarve. The rider was the strongest at the first category climb of Foia.

The route of the second day of the Portuguese race featured one climb of the third category, one of the second and a mountain finish in the first category climb of Foia. The first escape of the day included riders like Will Barta (CCC Team), Olivier Le Gac (Groupama-FDJ) and Brian van Goethem (Lotto Soudal) and built a gap of more than two minutes with the peloton.

This break was caught with 40 kilometres to go. Soon after Amaro Antunes (CCC Team) attacked and his teammate Riccardo Zoidl joined him some kilometres later. The two men were caught with 16 kilometres to go, just as the pack got ready to face the final climb.

Team Sky took the lead of the peloton with Tao Geoghegan Hart doing a hard work pulling his teammates David de la Cruz and Wout Poels. Their pace made the group smaller until only riders like Enric Mas (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), Antunes, Sam Oomen (Sunweb), Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) and Simon Spilak (Katusha-Alpecin) remained.

The first rider to made a move was Antunes and he created a gap with the rest. Poels accelerated from the chasers and caught the Portuguese, taking the rest with him. In the last metres, Pogacar made a new attack that nobody could match and crossed the finish line on his own.

Pogacar also took the lead of the General Classification.
