Lotto Soudal's Tim Wellens has taken the victory at the ITT of the Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta del Sol. The Belgian rider beat Jakob Fuglsang and Ion Izagirre in the day's competition.

The Individual Time Trial of the Spanish race was 16 kilometres long starting at Mancha Real and finishing in La Guardia de Jaen. Wellens had stated that he had been preparing in the discipline during the winter and he's shown the results.

The Belgian stopped the clock at 22 minutes and 25 seconds, being two seconds faster than Astana's Fuglsang and nine seconds than Izagirre. Jumbo-Visma's Steven Kruijswijk and Mitchelton-Scott's Adam Yates completed the top five of the day.

Wellens extended his lead of the Spanish race and stands now at seven seconds from Fuglsang and 14 from Izagirre.

The fourth stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia will be held between Armilla and Granada over a 120-kilometre route that features two first category climbs and two of the third category, which make it the Queen stage of the competition.
