The second stage of the newly created race was 184 kilometres long between Yas Island and Yas Mall. The escape of the day was formed by riders like Igor Boev, Sam Brand, Charles Planet, and Stepan Koerianov and created a gap over the peloton that reached the eleven minutes.

At around 80 kilometres to go, crosswinds affected the peloton and broke it in pieces, leaving behind riders like Tom Dumoulin and Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb) while at the front the leaders pulled harder to create bigger differences in GC. But the teams left behind worked hard and at the end managed to create once again a compact group.

The stage came down to a final sprint that was won by UAE Team Emirates' Fernando Gaviria, who outsprinted Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Elia Viviani and Lotto Soudal's Caleb Ewan. "It was a very difficult sprint because there are a lot of strong riders here for sprinting," said the Colombian.

"But my teammates did a really good job, notably in the crosswinds when the peloton split. At the end, I got a perfect lead-out from (Alexander) Kristoff. It's very important for us to win here as a team. The UAE is my new home."

Jumbo-Visma's Primoz Roglic keeps the lead of the general classification.

The third stage of the UAE Tour will be 179 kilometres long and will be the first of the mountain stages. The final of the day will be on the climb of Jebel Hafeet and will feature an average inclination of 9%, with a maximum of 11% with three kilometres to go.
