Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Elia Viviani has taken the victory of the fifth stage of the UAE Tour. The Italian was the fastest rider at the final sprint.

The fifth stage of the race was 181 kilometres long with a profile suitable once more for the fast men. The escape group of the day was formed by three riders of Gazprom RusVelo and two of Novo Nordisk and included names like Charles Planer, Stepan Kuriyanov and Fabio Calabria.

The peloton rode slowly due to the headwinds and managed to catch the escapees at 30 kilometres from the finish line. With 3.6 kilometres to go, Marc Sarreau (Groupama-FDJ) crashed and the team was left without any options for the final sprint.

The final two kilometres were quite chaotic due to the wind. Alexander Kristoff did a good job for his UAE Team Emirates' teammate Fernando Gaviria, who launched his sprint too soon and brought Sam Bennet (Bora-hansgrohe) and Elia Viviani (Quick-Step-Floors.)

Viviani proved to have the strongest sprint and crossed the finish line ahead of Gaviria and Katusha-Alpecin's Marcel Kittel. Bennett and Dimension Data's Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg completed the top five of the day.

Jumbo-Visma's Primoz Roglic stands at the top of the General Classification.
