Lotto Soudal's Tiesj Benoot has announced that he will not ride Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne on Sunday. The rider suffered a crash that forced him out of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.

Benoot was part of the escape group that was bound to win the race because most of the favourites were riding in it. But the insipid showers of the day, caused his bike to slip in one curve, finishing like this the expectations for the race. "We were riding away with a favourite group," said the rider at leaving the hospital.

"I think all good riders were present. The final was at full force at that moment. On that new climb (the Elverenberg) I was in fifth or sixth position but in a harmless turn to the left, I suddenly slid away. I have not seen the images yet, but I'm sure it looked awful."

The rider doesn't have any fractures but has some injuries from which he needs to recover. "I have a lot of abrasions and a few bruises," Benoot commented. "But I certainly didn't break anything. The most annoying thing is that my left knee took once more a serious hit. I have a scar in it from a fall I had last year during the Vuelta a España and it has opened again.

"That is why the wound is also so deep. We are now going to the hospital to have the wound cleaned properly and then to see how it should be treated."

It is uncertain if Benoot will be ready on time to defend his title in Strade Bianche. The rider will be replaced by Jens Keukeleire in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne.

Lotto Soudal's line-up for Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne (Third of March):

Jasper De Buyst
Stan Dewulf
Jens Keukeleire
Nikolas Maes
Rémy Mertz
Lawrence Naesen
Brian van Goethem
