Trek-Segafredo's Lotta Lepistö has finished in the second position of the Omloop van het Hageland but despite being on the podium, she is disappointed with the result.

The Belgian race came down to a reduced sprint in which the European champion Marta Bastianelli (Team Virtu) was the fastest. The finish line was just after a curve, which made it tricky to keep the sprinting line and the Italian rider took the most efficient way to the end.

"I am very, very disappointed," said Lepistö after the race. "Ellen (van Dijk) was a machine in the front, the whole team gave it their all and really worked hard to protect me and then to finish second... so frustrating.

"I should have opened [my sprint] a little earlier, but Marta was smart and closed my way. So, congrats to her. Let’s try again on Tuesday!"

Unlike Lepistö, Ellen van Dijk was happy with the result and the way the team performed in the race. "Lotta said that she had a little mistake in the sprint, but still she got second," the Dutch rider explained. "We didn’t win in the end, but I think we had a really strong team effort.

"Everyone gave their all, everyone was in the front quite often, and we shared the work. It’s good for the team spirit, especially after yesterday when everyone was a little down. We didn’t win but our spirit is high again, and we got a lot of confidence out of this race. On to the next one!"

Lepistö has already taken two victories in 2019 at the second and fourth stage of the Spanish Setmana Ciclista Valenciana.
