Annemiek van Vleuten surprised herself and the entire cycling world with a solo victory at Strade Bianche on Saturday.

The Mitchelton-Scott rider attacked with 12 kilometers to go and quickly rode away from her teammates to take her first victory at the Italian WorldTour race.

"I thought maybe it was a bit too early because I just had ten weeks of training after I broke my knee at the World Championships in Innsbruck," she explained shortly after securing the win. "But I worked very, very hard because this race was really on my wish list to win, as it's one of my favourite races."

Van Vleuten chose the right moment to attack, as her rivals seemingly had no chance of keeping up with the strong Dutchwoman.

"I just waited for a good moment," she said. "I only had Lucy Kennedy with me. It was good to have her there but we were a bit outnumbered. We had to play poker and I reckoned I had to put the hammer down on the uphill.

"It's one of the best victories. When we were taking a photo here yesterday I already said that this would be the best way to finish a race here."
