Tom Dumoulin is set to lead Team Sunweb at Tirreno Adriatico. The Dutch rider aims to reach a good overall position in the Italian race.
Dumoulin can play with his time-trial strengths at the race, as it opens with a team time trial and finished with an individual against the clock challenge. "On Wednesday we start the seven-day Tirreno Adriatico, beginning with the traditional 21.5 kilometres opening team time trial, followed by two relatively flat stages and three demanding stages before a final 10.1 kilometres individual time trial," said Sunweb coach Luke Roberts.
"With Tom, we chase a good result in the overall classification and we bring a very solid support team to Italy for this goal. Nicholas will be our road captain and we'll look to set ourselves up for a good GC position right from the opening team time trial."
The Dutch rider hit the deck at the UAE Tour and hopes to be at 100% for the race. "I’ve had a little time to recover from my crash at the UAE Tour," he commented. "I took it easy since then and I’m ready to fight for Tirreno-Adriatico now.
"There’s no long climb on the course this year but the Marche region is also very difficult for bike racing. I love to race there too. Jumbo-Visma was very strong at the UAE Tour. They’re here with the same team but I hope we can have a very strong TTT as well, and we’ll take it from there."
