Mitchelton-Scott's Simon Yates has taken his first ever individual time trial victory on the fifth day of Paris-Nice. This is the second win of the Briton in 2019.

Yates had already taken a victory in the current season at the fourth stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta del Sol, but to win the ITT at Paris-Nice was completely unexpected. The winner of the 2018 Vuelta a España completed the 25.5-kilometre course in 30 minutes and 26 seconds.

"I am really happy with my performance, I have been working on my time trial quite a lot the last few years but I didn't really expect to be the fastest today," said the rider. "At the start of the day, I thought it was for the TT specialists. So especially with how this course was I am very happy.

"It was really straight forward, there weren't any corners you really needed to brake for, it was just in the skis, so a pretty filthy time trial for a guy of my size. The climb in the middle wasn't really hard, the climb up to the finish line was probably harder so I am really happy with what I did today."

Yates sits at 18 minutes and 17 seconds from race leader Michal Kwiatkowski in the overall classification, mainly because of bad positioning at the stages with crosswinds and bad luck. "The sensations are good for the next days, I knew I had good form, well decent form coming into the race and just got caught out in the crosswinds, it wasn't from a lack of form or anything," he explained.
