Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Elia Viviani has won the third stage of Tirreno-Adriatico. The Italian crossed the finish line ahead of Peter Sagan and Fernando Gaviria.

The third stage of the Italian race was 226 kilometres long between Pomarance and Foligno. The escape of the day was formed by six riders and included familiar names like Natnael Berhane (Cofidis), Stepan Kuriyanov (Gazprom-RusVelo) and Sebastian Schönberger (Neri Sottoli-Selle Italia).

The escape group was caught with four kilometres to go and right away the teams with sprinters organised themselves ahead of the final kilometre. Bora-hansgrohe's Peter Sagan was the first rider to launch his final sprint and behind him, Elia Viviani and Fernando Gaviria were in a good position.

The Italian of Deceuninck-Quick-Step showed once again his great form and took the victory ahead of Sagan and Gaviria, who were separated by only millimetres. Dimension Data's Giacomo Nizzolo and Lotto Soudal's Jens Keukeleire completed the top five of the day.

Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) maintains the lead of the overall classification and is followed by his teammate Brent Bookwalter, who has the same time. Jumbo-Visma's Primoz Roglic and Laurens De Plus sit seven seconds behind.
