A fracture of the collarbone has put an end to Andrea Tafi's dream to ride Paris-Roubaix at 52. The former rider and winner of the race commented his intentions at the end of 2018.

Tafi was participating at a Grand Fondo in Fucecchio, Italy, when he crashed and broke his left collarbone. This fracture means that the Italian won't be able to start in the next edition of Paris-Roubaix, which will be held on the 14th of April.

The winner of the 1999 edition of the race had the intention of riding the 'Hell of the North' once again. "Everyone says that I'm crazy but I don't agree," said Tafi last November to the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws. "I follow my heart. I know how difficult it is but I also want to see where are my limits.

"I don't set goals in terms of results, I want to train and see how far I can go. The next few months will be tough, but it is something I absolutely want to do. It is something that no one has ever done in cycling."

Despite his intentions, it was unclear if the rider was really going to start in the race, as he didn't have any team to ride it with. He commented that he asked Patrick Lefevere if he could ride it with Deceuninck-Quick-Step but the CEO of the team turned him down.

"Patrick Lefevere told me: 'Andrea, I have a great team. I like your proposal, but I have no way of giving you a place'. Which I understand, of course."

The rider claimed that he had found a team to ride the Classic, but never revealed the name.
